Porto Alegre, which was founded next to the river Guaíba, receives daily thousands of tourists, who want to enjoy the special atmosphere of the city. A lot of people visit the state of Rio Grande do Sul to get to know the southern Brazilian mountains (Serra Gaúcha), which are located in a distance of about 120 kilometers from the city. Arriving in Porto Alegre

By bus: If you go to Porto Alegre by bus, you will arrive at Porto Alegre Bus Station, located in the historical center of the city. From Porto Alegre Bus Station you can easily get to different quarters of the city. To move around, you can choose between the public transportation system (bus and subway) or the taxi. The taxi stands are located close to the bus station of Porto Alegre.

By plane: If you go to Porto Alegre by plane, you will arrive at Salgado Filho International Airport, which is located in a distance of 15 km from the center of the city. There are flights from all over Brazil going to the airport of Porto Alegre. You can take the subway or the bus to go from the airport to other quarters of Porto Alegre. The subway and bus station are located next to the airport. Alternatively to the bus and subway, you can take a taxi.

Where to stay

There are different accommodation options for your stay in Porto Alegre. You will find most of the hotels of Porto Alegre in Moinhos de Vento. If you come to Porto Alegre to enjoy the nightlife, you should choose the quarter Cidade Baixa.

There are also numerous hotels in the southern part of Porto Alegre. If you stay in the southern part of Porto Alegre, you will be located close to the stadium Beira Rio, which is the stadium of the Brazilian football team Sport Club Internacional. However, if you choose this quarter, you have to consider, that you will not be located very close to other touristic places of Porto Alegre neither to the airport.

Where to go

Porto Alegre is located next to the river Guaíba. The city has about 1.5 million inhabitants, but still preserves the traditions of a small city: Its inhabitants go for a walk on a Sunday, prepare a barbecue or have a chimarrão (typical tea of the region of Rio Grande do Sul) with the neighbours.

You should go to the historical center of Porto Alegre and get to know its museums and monuments. It is a great way to get to know the history of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul.

At Alfândega Square (Praça da Alfândega), you can find Museu de Arte (Arts Museum), Memorial do Rio Grande do Sul (Memorial of Rio Grande do Sul) and Clube do Comércio (Social Club). Close to the Clube do Comércio you can find the famous statues of Mário Quintana and Carlos Drummond de Andrade. In the center of Porto Alegre, you can also find the public market Mercado Público and the cultural center Santander Cultural. You should not leave Porto Alegre without seeing Rua da Praia, which is also known as the Rua dos Andradas which is the birthplace of Porto Alegre.

You should visit Guaíba lake, one of the meeting points for inhabitants and tourists. The sunset at the Lago Guaíba is very beautiful. Usually, the gaúchos (name of the inhabitants of Rio Grande do Sul) watch the sunset while they are having a Chimarrão (name of the typical tea of Rio Grande do Sul). Another must go in Porto Alegre is  the cultural center of the city called Usina do Gasômetro.

In the city of Porto Alegre, you can find so many parks that it is difficult to choose which park to go to. We suggest the Farroupilha Park, where you can find some important and famous monuments of the city. Close to this park, you can find the Market of Antiques. Another suggestion is Moinhos de Vento Park, which is also called Parcão, and is one of the most visited parks of the capital of Rio Grande do Sul.

The nightlife of Porto Alegre is exciting. The quarter of Cidade Baixa is the most fashion quarter of Porto Alegre to go out at night. In this district, you can find a lot of bars and clubs with live music. Specially in the streets of João Alfredo, Lima e Silva and República you can find a lot of bars and nightclubs. If you want to get to know the local music of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, you should go to a CTG - Center of the tradition of Rio Grande do Sul.

When you visit Porto Alegre, you shouldn't miss the opportunity to visit the cities of Gramado and Canela. Both cities are located in a distance of 120 km from Porto Alegre, and there are buses going daily from Porto Alegre to Gramado and from Porto Alegre to Canela. In Gramado you can do pedal boat tours and you can visit a miniature city Minimundo. In Canela you can visit the waterfall Cachoeira do Caracol, which is considered an outstanding attraction for its visitors.

Where to eat

The most typical food of the culinary of Rio Grande do Sul is churrasco (the typical Brazilian barbeque). You will find many churrascarias (the typical Brazilian steak houses) around the city. Another good place to eat is the Municipal Market, where the value for money of the food is pretty good.

You can also find a lot of different restaurants in the quarters Moinhos de Vento and Cidade Baixa.
